This is Ink & Intrigue—the blog where romance ignites, secrets simmer, and every love story hides a twist. I’m your blog host, Sheila Kell, romance author and lover of plot twists, slow burns, and morally questionable book boyfriends.
Today, I’m talking about how reader feedback shapes my writing. So, off I go—
How Reader Feedback Shapes My Writing
When I first started writing steamy, high-stakes romantic suspense, I thought I knew exactly what readers wanted. Brooding heroes, fiery heroines, explosions, betrayals, kisses that left bruises on the soul…and of course, the happily ever after.
But then my inbox started filling with something I hadn’t expected: your voices.
Emails. DMs. Reviews. Comments. Readers telling me what made their hearts race, what made them cry, and what made them stay up until 3 a.m. flipping pages even though they had work in the morning.
That feedback? It changed everything.
Why Feedback Matters
Reader feedback isn’t just validation. It’s a compass.
- When someone says, “I gasped out loud when he betrayed her,” I know my twists are hitting hard enough to pull readers deep into the danger.
- When someone confesses, “I needed tissues during that final reunion,” I know the emotional punch landed exactly where I wanted.
- And when a reader writes, “Please, please give Marcus his own book!” Well, guess who just got promoted from side character to future leading man?
How It Shapes My Stories
Every comment teaches me something:
✨ Pacing. If readers say they couldn’t put the book down, I lean into that tension-building style even harder.
✨ Character Depth. If they want more of the heroine’s backstory, I know to peel back another layer in the next draft.
✨ Romantic Payoff. If they’re begging for that kiss earlier, I might shift the timing so the slow burn doesn’t scorch them too long.
The Best Part? Connection.
Writing can feel like whispering into the void. But when readers talk back? Suddenly it’s a conversation.
You tell me what you loved, what broke you, and what you’re desperate for next. And I get to take that energy and funnel it straight into the next story. So every book feels like a love letter, not just from me to you, but from you back to me.
So, What’s Next?
Keep talking to me. Drop those reviews. Send the DMs. Tell me who you want to see get their second chance, who you’d trust to guard your body (or your heart), and what twists you never saw coming.
Because at the end of the day, my books aren’t just my stories. They’re ours.
Thanks for joining me on Ink & Intrigue, where romance and suspense go hand in hand.
