Twilla Kay Lamm is known for putting the reader in the room with her characters by providing sensory details on every page. Her debut novel, His Sweet Obsession, is an emotional journey between the heroine and the hero as they battle between trust and truth. Can she forgive his lies? Will he forgive hers? What will they risk for their happily-ever-after?
In this spotlight, Twilla Kay Lamm shares that the television show “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman” was the inspiration for His Sweet Obsession.
What drew you to writing romance in particular?
I like the happily-ever-after endings of good romance stories. Real life isn’t like that.
How do you handle writer’s block, especially during emotional or steamy scenes?
I keep a stack of index cards next to my recliner and take notes while I read or watch TV. Then, when I sit at the computer, I have some idea where I’m heading. If I’m working on a steamy scene, I listen to the characters. If I’ve created a complete character, then he/she will lead me to where I need to go. For example, if my heroine is shy, she won’t take the lead.
What’s your typical writing routine like—do you write with emotion or outline first?
I’m not sure I have a routine. I start with the heroine and give her a problem. Then I do the same for the hero. Then I write to see how their problems will bring them together.
Are your characters based on real people, or entirely fictional?
My characters are fictional, but I do a lot of research on personality and psychological traits. I think it’s important for the characters to be “real” in that sense. Birth order is one I use all the time.
What advice would you give to aspiring authors?
Listen to yourself. If you want to write, then do so. Don’t let someone’s negative opinion of your writing stop you from achieving your goal. Years ago, I had an instructor who told me that submitting your writing is a game of sales. Every “no” or rejection brings you closer to a “yes.”
Which books or authors have influenced you the most?
I’ve always loved the author Kathleen E. Woodiwiss. Her descriptive passages contain deep sensory details which, in my opinion, bring the story to life. As a teenager, I was a Victoria Holt fan.
What do you like to read in your free time?
Besides a good romance, I like a good mystery. I belong to a local book club, and we read anything and everything. A good book is a good book.
What are you working on next?
Presently, I’m working on His Sweet Maggie. It is the story of Margaret Trehern, who finds herself pregnant and unmarried. The hero is Brandt Kincaid, and he is in jail for a murder he didn’t commit. The year is 1859, and the location is the Choctaw Nation in Indian Territory.

Twilla Kay Lamm is an Oklahoma writer who writes books about strong women and the men who love them. Twilla began her professional career as a medical laboratory technologist. After almost 30 years in the field, she returned to college and earned a master’s degree in early childhood education. Twilla chose to teach and work with underprivileged children and their families. When Twilla retired, she started writing and discovered that creating fictional stories is a lot like child’s play.
