This is Ink & Intrigue—the blog where romance ignites, secrets simmer, and every love story hides a twist. I’m your blog host, Sheila Kell, romance author and lover of plot twists, slow burns, and morally questionable book boyfriends.
Today, I’m thrilled to introduce you to an author whose stories deliver fierce heroines—SD Porter! If you love dystopian and apocalyptic tales filled with danger and deception, you’re in for a treat.
SD Porter is known for writing heroines who are as tough as they are lovable. Her latest release, The Nova Chronicles, is an edge-of-your-seat survival quest that will have you rooting for the fierce heroine from page one.
In this spotlight, SD Porter shares a character interview, and gives us a behind-the-scenes look at The Nova Chronicles.
Whether you write love stories, devour them, or dream of doing both—you’re in the right place. Let’s get into it and give a warm welcome to SD Porter! 💖
- What’s your full name, and do you like it?
My name is Nova Angelica Bellson. I got my middle name from my grandmother. I do like my name. It’s unusual. I haven’t met another Nova.
- Where are you from, and where do you live now?
I grew up in Spanaway, Washington, a little town near Tacoma. We call it Spanahood, because you don’t want to go out at night. There is a lot of crime in a few neighborhoods. The drones don’t even go there.
- How old are you (or how old do you feel)?
I’m seventeen but sometimes, since my mom died, I feel like I’m the mom. There’s been a lot of losses in my life and I tend to be the caretaker. IN the last year, I’ve really focused on making sure my dad is okay. And when my best friend lost his mom, I practically lived at their house for 3 months, just making sure they were okay.
- How would you describe yourself in three words?
Hmm, I’d say, determined, adventurous, and secretly pretty sensitive.
- What’s your current relationship status?
Single. I’ve never had a real boyfriend. I spend most of my time with my best friend, Jonas.
- What’s the biggest event that shaped who you are?
My mother’s death. We were very close and she died so suddenly. I felt like a lost half of my soul. I miss her terribly. My mother was a very strong woman…both my parents are, but she never let obstacles get in the way of her goals. I admired her strength.
- What do you want more than anything right now?
I want to live a life of freedom and adventure. My life is so small…living in the technological cages we’ve built for ourselves. I want to hike, camp, and explore. Being couped up in one town your whole life is not my idea of living.
- What’s standing in your way?
Government regulations and fees. Only the rich can afford to go anywhere. Not to mention, that you have to get permission to even leave your district.
- Who are you closest to?
My dad and I are very close, especially after the loss of my mother. All we have is eachother now. I do have my best friend Jonas. We are more like brother and sister than friends. He’s been there for me and vice versa. I don’t know where I’d be without him.
- Who do you trust the most?
I trust my dad. He has always been a man of his word. He tells the truth and I know that he would do anything for me.
- Have you ever been in love?
No, I’ve never been in love. I hope to someday find somebody and get married, but it’s really difficult to meet people face to face and I’m not really into online relationships. Everything we do online is monitored, so I don’t really feel like putting my heart out there online.
- What does “home” mean to you?
Home means being with the people I love. Right now, that’s just dad and me. Maybe someday I’ll be able to add to that, or maybe my dad will remarry…but, it’s a pretty small, but loving, life.
- What’s something you’re really good at?
I have earned my black belt in Taekwondo. I also love boarding, when the weather is nice. I love to draw, and have been working on improving my skills. It allows me to explore things I can only imagine.
- What’s a weakness you try to hide?
I tend to overthink things. I’m also a terrible singer…just ask Jonas.
- Are you more of a leader or a follower?
Definitely a follower, unless the leadership sucks. If there is no leadership, or bad leadership, I will try to get everyone to work together. We did a lot of group projects in school, and I usually took a support roll.
- Morning person or night owl?
Definitely a night owl, like my dad. My mom was the morning person in our family.
- Coffee, tea, or something stronger?
Probably tea, but honestly, water with a little lemon is my beverage of choice.
- Favorite way to spend a day off?
If it’s nice out, skateboarding with Jonas. If it’s rainy, which is not uncommon in Washington, I love to curl up with a book. If my dad is home, we play video games together, which is always fun cuz I always win.
- Do you have any habits, tics, or superstitions?
I’m not sure you’d call it a superstition, but sometimes it feels like I can almost read people’s minds. I know that’s not possible, but with certain people, I can almost hear them speak before they open their mouths!
- What’s your guilty pleasure?
Popcorn sprinkled with cayenne pepper…my dad got me started on that.
- What’s the hardest decision you’ve had to make?
Leaving…
- How have you changed since the beginning of your story?
I’ve changed in ways that I didn’t even think possible. Sometimes life just throws you a major curveball. I’ll let you all read my story to find out!
- What’s one thing you’ve learned about yourself?
That people will surprise you…good and bad. I had lived a fairly sheltered life and wasn’t expecting the things I discovered. Life is not safe. You need to be ready.
- What scares you?
Losing the people I love. What will be expected of me? Will I have to leave the people I love behind, for the sake of others? The thought terrifies me.
- If your life were a movie, who would play you?
Belle Ramsey, from Game of Thrones…she is a badass.
- What’s something people would never guess about you?
I’m a hopeless romantic. I keep that part of my locked up pretty tight.
- What’s your personal motto?
Fear is just information.
