Why I Love Writing Characters Who Have Every Reason Not to Fall in Love

This is Ink & Intrigue—the blog where romance ignites, secrets simmer, and every love story hides a twist. I’m your blog host, Sheila Kell, romance author and lover of plot twists, slow burns, and morally questionable book boyfriends.

Let’s be honest: the easiest love stories to write are the ones where everything lines up just right. The perfect person, perfect timing, perfect circumstances—no secrets, no complications, and definitely no emotional baggage lurking in the background like a storm cloud.

But honestly? Those stories never capture my attention.

I’m drawn to the people who have every reason not to fall in love—the ones carrying old wounds, who’ve learned the hard way that trust comes with consequences, the ones who build careful walls around their hearts and swear they’re better off keeping everyone at a distance.

Those are the characters with the furthest to travel—and their journeys? Always the most rewarding.

In romantic suspense, love never shows up at a convenient moment. It swoops in when danger is closing in, the stakes are rising, and the characters are already carrying more than they think they can handle. They’re focused on survival. The last thing on their minds is romance—until suddenly, it isn’t.

And honestly, that’s exactly why it matters.

Love isn’t about turning someone into a brand-new person. It’s about revealing who they’ve been all along. The fiercely independent heroine learns that accepting help isn’t weakness. The guarded hero discovers vulnerability isn’t defeat. Together, they realize strength isn’t about standing alone—it’s about knowing who stands beside you when everything falls apart.

Those emotional journeys? That’s what I love most about writing romantic suspense. The danger might drive the plot, but it’s the character growth that stays with me. Watching two people fight their feelings, deny the obvious, and finally realize they’re stronger together than apart—it never gets old.

That’s one of the reasons I absolutely loved writing Silent Night.

Neither of these characters is looking for love. Both have every reason to keep their distance. Both know the risks that come with letting someone in. But sometimes, the most powerful stories begin the moment two people stop fighting what they feel—and start fighting for each other.

Those are the romances I love most. Not because they’re easy—but because they’re worth the risk.

If you’re planning to join Anya and Justin when Silent Night releases this Saturday, I can’t wait for you to meet them.

Thanks for joining me on Ink & Intrigue, where romance and suspense go hand in hand.
