This is Ink & Intrigue—the blog where romance ignites, secrets simmer, and every love story hides a twist. I’m your blog host, Sheila Kell, romance author and lover of plot twists, slow burns, and morally questionable book boyfriends.
One of the questions I’m asked most as an author is: “Where do your story ideas come from?” Sometimes, a character barges into my imagination, refusing to leave until I put them on the page. Other times, it’s a setting that casts a spell, or a single question that keeps me up at night. And every so often, a unique opportunity lands in my lap—one that feels tailor-made, as if the universe is nudging me to say, This story is for you.
That’s exactly what happened with The Wild Rose Press’s “Men and Women of Valor” series.
If you’ve been following my work, you already know I have a soft spot for courageous men and women—firefighters, investigators, security professionals—ordinary people who do extraordinary things. I’m endlessly fascinated by the strength, sacrifice, and quiet resilience it takes to step into danger for the sake of others.
So when Wild Rose Press invited me (and my fellow authors) to join the “Men and Women of Valor” series, I didn’t hesitate.
The series centers on Bolton Valor Security, following former military men and women who now use their hard-earned skills to solve dangerous cases, protect the vulnerable, and face threats the rest of us hope we’ll never meet. Each book is penned by a different author, offering you new characters, fresh adventures, and a shared universe you’ll want to revisit again and again.
I couldn’t wait to dive in. But the real magic? That started with a question: Who would my characters be?
It wasn’t long before Luka and Olivia stepped forward.
Luka is the kind of hero I love—reliable, capable, driven to protect. Olivia is his perfect match: smart, independent, and more than able to stand her ground. Neither expects their professional relationship to become personal, but as danger creeps closer, the lines between duty and desire start to blur.
And that’s where the heart of the story beats.
One of the pure joys of writing Crossing Boundaries was the setting: the wild beauty of New Zealand. Its sweeping landscapes are more than just a backdrop—they’re practically a character in their own right, offering both breathtaking romance and the lurking shadows of suspense. After all, even paradise has its share of danger.
But at its core, Crossing Boundaries isn’t just about solving a case or outrunning the bad guys.
- It’s about trust.
- It’s about courage.
- And it’s about the bravest leap of all: letting someone else into your heart.
I’m so grateful to The Wild Rose Press for allowing me into this world and for the chance to collaborate with such talented authors. And I’m thrilled to finally introduce you to Luka and Olivia—two characters who challenged and inspired me every step of the way.
I hope you love their story as much as I loved writing it.
