Meet H.G. Hedger

This is Ink & Intrigue—the blog where romance ignites, secrets simmer, and every love story hides a twist. I’m your blog host, Sheila Kell, a romance author and lover of plot twists, slow burns, and morally questionable book boyfriends.

Today, I’m thrilled to introduce H.G. Hedger, an author who blends heart-accelerating suspense with hard-won hope and romance! If you love mysteries featuring complex heroes, determined heroines, and love that dares to break through emotional barriers, you’re in for a treat.

H.G. Hedger’s latest release, Beyond Valor, brings together a combat veteran and private investigator haunted by his past, and a spunky law student desperate to find her missing sister. As they pursue a dangerous trail of secrets, the attraction growing between them challenges the walls they’ve built around their hearts—and puts them both at risk.

In this spotlight, H.G. shares the personal experiences that helped inspire Beyond Valor and explores the courage it takes to face the past, learn to trust, and open your heart to love again.

Whether you love a gripping mystery, a complicated hero, or a romance that makes you root for two shielded hearts to find each other, you’re in the right place. Let’s give H.G. Hedger a warm welcome!

Before H.G. gives us the inspiration behind Beyond Valor, I want to read you the book’s tagline because I love it: One missing sister. Five days. No margin for error.  As a fellow author in the Bolton Valor Series, I’m excited to give H.G. the floor.

Sometimes a story begins with a single idea. For Beyond Valor, it started with a call for submissions from my publisher for a military romantic suspense series featuring former service members working for a private security and investigations firm. The possibilities flooded my imagination. Who would these men and women be after leaving the military? What battles might they still be fighting? And what would happen when a case forced them to confront the past they’d worked so hard to leave behind?

Those questions struck a personal chord.

Two of my three sons served as combat infantrymen in Iraq and Afghanistan. As their mother, I witnessed how war changes lives—not only for those who serve, but for the families who love them. Coming home doesn’t necessarily mean leaving the battle behind. Sometimes the hardest work begins afterward, in the struggle to heal, reconnect, and find your place in a world that has moved on.

My years as a nurse also shaped my writing. I’ve seen how people can exploit vulnerabilities in systems meant to protect us, but I’ve also witnessed the extraordinary dedication of those who refuse to abandon someone in need. That contrast—representing the worst and best of human nature—continues to fascinate me.

But there’s something else that finds its way into nearly everything I write: I’m a sucker for a happy ending. No matter how impossible things look, I’m always rooting for people to find their way through the darkness. I want to believe that love can survive the hardest trials, that people can change, and that even those who have lost their way deserve the chance to find it again.

In Beyond Valor, combat veteran and private investigator Cody Everson and Ivy Ashford, a law student desperately searching for her missing sister, are thrown together in a dangerous investigation. Their journey is about more than uncovering what happened to Ivy’s sister. It’s about confronting the past, learning to trust, and discovering that opening your heart takes courage, too.

Because for me, a happy ending isn’t about pretending the hard things never happened. It’s about believing that what transpired doesn’t have to define what comes next. And I’ll always be rooting for that possibility—especially when the odds are against it.

Excerpt:

Cody couldn’t pin down his first reaction to her—and that said something. He’d seen it all. A combat vet from Afghanistan and Iraq, he’d survived firefights, watched IEDs rip through Humvees and men alike.

After the military chewed him up and spit him out, he hit rock bottom, clawed his way back, and spent the last two years stacking sober days like sandbags. He figured he could handle anything.

But Ivy Ashford? She knocked something loose. Pale, makeup-free, her face was framed by tangled hair, her green eyes shadowed but still flickering with hope.

What do you say to a twenty-five-year-old who looks fifteen, drowning in an oversized sweatshirt and the weight of everything she’s lost?

What do you say to the last person left standing, staring at you like you’re the only one who can bring her sister home?

Cody stood at the edge of something he hadn’t seen coming. One step, and he’d fall.

BIO:

H.G. Hedger’s love of words began on her parents’ knees, where daily read-alouds opened the doors and windows of imagination. As a child, she wrote stories and staged plays for her siblings. She went on to double-major in Psychology and Creative Writing & Literature at the University of Michigan, where she received a Hopwood Undergraduate Award.

Then life happened. Three sons, six rescue dogs, and a nursing career later, she picked up the pen again and discovered that writing wasn’t simply something she’d once loved. It was part of who she was.

An avid reader and lover of nature, H.G. lives in Michigan with her husband. Her published novels include The Circle of Willis (2024), Reserves (2025), and Beyond Valor (2026). She is currently working on Blue Heron Island, a story set on a fictional isle in the middle of Lake Superior.

I hope you loved getting to know H.G. Hedger and learning of her latest release, Beyond Valor. If you haven’t added her books to your TBR yet, now’s the time—trust me, you won’t want to miss them. 💖
