The Characters Who Refuse to Behave

Welcome back to Ink & Intrigue, where romance ignites, secrets simmer, and every love story hides a twist! I’m Sheila Kell, and today we’re discussing something every writer eventually discovers: fictional characters are terrible at following instructions.

You would think that being the person who creates these characters would give me some authority over them.

You would be wrong.

When the Characters Take Over

I can spend hours planning a story. I know where the suspense begins, when the romance heats up, and exactly how the hero and heroine are supposed to react.

Then I start writing.

Suddenly, my carefully planned hero decides he’s falling in love three chapters earlier than expected. My heroine refuses to accept his help. And someone who was supposed to appear in one scene develops a personality and demands a bigger role.

Excuse me? Who’s writing this book?

Apparently, we’re negotiating.

And here’s the frustrating part: sometimes they’re right.

The Hero Who Falls First

I have a soft spot for protective heroes. The ones who can face down danger without blinking but become completely flustered by one stubborn woman. They may be trained agents, firefighters, or motorcycle riders, but the moment their hearts get involved, all that confidence can go straight out the window. Especially when the heroine doesn’t cooperate.

He wants to protect her. She wants to protect herself.

He insists she stay somewhere safe. She wants to know who put him in charge.

Meanwhile, I’m sitting at my keyboard wondering how these two are ever going to reach their happily-ever-after without driving each other crazy first.

Of course, that’s half the fun.

When the Heroine Changes the Rules

My heroines have opinions. Strong ones.

They aren’t interested in standing quietly behind the hero while he handles everything. They have their own strengths, goals, and occasionally spectacularly bad ideas.

And when a hero tells one of them to stay put? Well, let’s just say he should probably have a backup plan.

But I love writing those moments when two strong people learn that trusting someone doesn’t mean surrendering their independence. Sometimes the greatest act of courage isn’t running toward danger. It’s letting someone stand beside you.

The Scene That Wasn’t Supposed to Happen

One of my favorite parts of writing is discovering a moment I didn’t plan.

Maybe it’s a quiet conversation after a dangerous rescue. Maybe it’s a joke that slips out during a tense situation. Or maybe it’s a character revealing something that changes how I understand them.

Those surprises can make a story feel more alive.

Not every unexpected idea belongs in the finished book, of course. Sometimes I have to remind my characters that we have a plot to finish and a deadline to meet.

They rarely seem concerned about the deadline. Neither do my cats.

Come to think of it, my characters and my cats have quite a bit in common. They demand attention, interrupt my work, and behave as though I’m here solely for their convenience.

At least the characters don’t sit on my manuscript.

Why I Love the Unexpected

For all my complaining about uncooperative characters, I wouldn’t change it.

The best love stories aren’t just about two people finding each other. They’re about discovering what happens when love challenges everything they thought they knew about themselves.

A protective hero learns he can’t control every outcome. An independent heroine discovers that accepting help doesn’t make her weak. And somewhere between danger, stubbornness, laughter, and a few stolen kisses, they find something worth fighting for.

That’s the kind of romance I love writing. Even when my characters refuse to follow the outline.

Let’s Talk!

Readers, have you ever read a book where a character surprised you by doing something completely unexpected?

Or better yet, have you ever wanted to reach into a book, grab a character by the shoulders, and ask, “What on earth are you thinking?”

I’d love to hear about it in the comments!

Thanks for joining me on Ink & Intrigue, where romance and suspense go hand in hand.
