This is Ink & Intrigue—the blog where romance ignites, secrets simmer, and every love story hides a twist. I’m your blog host, Sheila Kell, romance author and lover of plot twists, slow burns, and morally questionable book boyfriends.
When you think about your favorite book, what do you remember?
The big moments, probably. The first kiss. The shocking betrayal. The scene where you were certain someone wasn’t going to make it out alive.
But sometimes, it’s the little things that stay with us. A nickname. A favorite chair. The way someone takes their coffee. A cat who has absolutely no intention of following anyone’s rules.
Those details might seem insignificant, but to me, they’re part of what makes a fictional world feel real.
It’s More Than the Action
I write romantic suspense, so danger is never far away. My characters face threats, uncover secrets, and occasionally make decisions that leave me wondering whether they have any sense of self-preservation.
But they can’t spend every waking moment running from danger. They need lives. They need friends who tease them, coworkers who know exactly which buttons to push, and places where they can relax long enough to remember what normal feels like.
At Station 12 in my Fireline Hearts series, the firefighters aren’t just people who respond to emergencies. They’re a crew with friendships, habits, nicknames, and a shared history.
Those everyday interactions matter just as much to me as the dramatic rescues.
Sometimes a Cat Steals the Scene
And then there are the animals.
Anyone who’s met Cardio in Embers of Deception knows that a cat doesn’t need a speaking role to have a personality. Cardio has opinions. Strong ones.
I happen to live with three cats of my own, so I have plenty of experience with furry creatures who believe the household exists for their convenience.
Bella, Camilla, and Cooper have taught me that even the smallest daily interruption can become a memorable moment.
Especially when you’re trying to work. 😂
The Places Become Familiar, Too
One of my favorite parts of writing a series is returning to a setting that already feels familiar.
Readers get to revisit places they’ve come to know, catch up with characters from earlier books, and discover what life looks like after the final chapter.
I love those moments when a familiar face walks into a scene, even if they’re only there for a few lines.
It reminds me their lives didn’t stop when their own book ended.
The Details That Stay With Us
Of course, I want readers to remember the suspense, the romance, and the moments that made their hearts race.
But I also hope they remember the friendships, the laughter, the teasing, and the small gestures that reveal who a character really is. Because sometimes the moment that makes you fall in love with a fictional character isn’t a dramatic rescue or a passionate declaration. Sometimes it’s something as simple as remembering how someone takes their coffee.
Now I’d love to hear from you!
What’s a small detail from a favorite book or series that has stayed with you? A pet, a nickname, a favorite place, or a character’s funny habit?
Tell me in the comments. I’d love to know!
Thanks for joining me on Ink & Intrigue, where romance and suspense go hand in hand.
